Recorded: June 1977 at Rockfield Studios in South Wales, UK

This 1977 release, the band’s fifth studio album, was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales and mixed in London’s Advision Studios. It became the band’s first U.S. gold-selling album within two months of release, and went platinum. The singles included “Closer to the Heart” and “Cinderella Man” while the album peaked at #33 on the Billboard 200 and #22 on the U.K. album charts.

On 1977’s A Farewell to Kings it quickly becomes apparent that Rush had improved their songwriting and strengthened their focus and musical approach. Synthesizers also mark their first prominent appearance on a Rush album, a direction the band would continue to pursue on future releases. With the popular hit single “Closer to the Heart,” the trio showed that they could compose concise and traditionally structured songs, while the 11-minute “Xanadu” remains an outstanding accomplishment all these years later (superb musicianship merged with vivid lyrics help create one of Rush’s best all-time tracks). The album-opening title track begins with a tasty classical guitar/synth passage, before erupting into a powerful rocker. The underrated “Madrigal” proves to be a delicately beautiful composition, while “Cinderella Man” is one of Rush’s few songs to include lyrics penned entirely by Geddy Lee. The ten-minute tale of a dangerous black hole, “Cygnus X-1,” closes the album on an unpredictable note, slightly comparable to the two bizarre extended songs on 1975’s Caress of Steel. A Farewell to Kings successfully built on the promise of their breakthrough 2112, and helped broaden their audience. –Greg Prato

Recorded: June–August 1978 at Rockfield Studios in South Wales, UK

Another favorite of true Rush fans, this sixth studio album, released in 1978, once more explored fantasy and science fiction themes in Neil Peart’s lyrics. The final track, the ambitious nine-and-a-half minute La Villa Strangiato, was the band’s first instrumental. The album peaked at #47 on theBillboard charts, and was the group’s fourth consecutive gold album in the U.S., featuring the singles The Trees and Circumstances.

Merging an increasingly polished sound with masterful progressive rock songwriting, Hemispheres is considered one of Rush’s greatest, if possibly overlooked, releases. Recorded in the UK, with only four tracks it captures the band at its most ambitious, notably on the nearly 20 minute, side-long Cygnus X-1 Book II Hemispheres and the trio’s first instrumental, La Villa Strangiato. The Trees has endured for well over three decades as one of the band’s most popular, yet misunderstood songs. Neil Peart has said there was never any deep or cryptic meaning to his lyrics.

It was just a flash. I was working on an entirely different thing when I saw a cartoon picture of these trees carrying on like fools. I thought, ‘What if trees acted like people?’ So I saw it as a cartoon really and wrote it that way. I think that’s the image it conjures up to a listener or a reader. A very simple statement. –Neil Peart
While such albums as 1980’s Permanent Waves and 1981’s Moving Pictures are usually considered Rush’s masterpieces (and with good reason), 1978’s Hemispheres is just as deserving. Maybe the fact that the album consists of only four compositions (half are lengthy pieces) was a bit too intimidating for some, but the near 20-minute-long “Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres” is arguably the band’s finest extended track. While the story line isn’t as comprehensible as “2112” was, it’s much more consistent musically, twisting and turning through five different sections which contrast heavy rock sections against more sedate pieces. Neil Peart had become one of rock’s most accomplished lyricists by this point, as evidenced by “The Trees,” which deals with racism and inequality in a unique way (set in a forest!). And as always, the trio prove to be experts at their instruments, this time on the complex instrumental “La Villa Strangiato.” Geddy Lee’s shrieking vocals on the otherwise solid “Circumstances” may border on the irritating, but Hemispheres remains one of Rush’s greatest releases. –Greg Prato

Recorded live in Miami on May 29th, 1959 in front of 2500 people at the 2nd annual Disc Jockey Convention.

Released in 1959, Beauty and the Beat! is an album by Peggy Lee, accompanied by the George Shearing Quintet. It was produced by Dave Cavanaugh.

Peggy Lee was accompanied by George Shearing and his quintet for a performance at a music industry convention in Miami in May 1959, marking the first time the two would work together. It has remained uncertain over the years how much of this album was actually recorded live during that technically-plagued concert and how much was reconstructed in the studio later. Nonetheless, it’s a swinging session including standards by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Rodgers and Hart.

Upon its first release Beauty and the Beat! was billed as a live recording from a Miami convention of disc jockeys. Though Peggy Lee and George Shearing did in fact perform there (and attempts were made to record them for later release), the songs heard on the subsequent LP were recorded in the studio and overdubbed with rather obvious canned applause, announcements, and even post-production echo. Lee and Shearing, who had never recorded before, conceived a set of completely new arrangements that played to their strengths: stately blues and effervescent swing. The best of the former comes on a pair of locale-referencing quasi-blues, “I Lost My Sugar in Salt Lake City” and “You Came a Long Way From St. Louis,” both of which Lee and Shearing are able to transform into languorous, respectable torch songs. The usually downcast “Blue Prelude” is actually taken at a laissez faire tempo that Lee treats well, and the original set ends with “Get Out of Town” and “Satin Doll,” a pair of bemused, affectionate performances that perfectly suit the pair. Lee and Shearing’s only collaboration on record — though both would occasionally perform together thereafter — is a supremely chilled session of late-night blues from two masters of the form. –AllMusic Review by John Bush

Bronx, NY-born and raised Latin superstar and award-winning artist Prince Royce will be celebrating the album release of Double Vision (RCA Records/Sony Music Latin), his first ever English language album.Double Vision features guest appearances by Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Snoop Dogg, Tyga and Kid Ink.

The new deluxe album from Prince Royce featuring hit songs “Back it Up” ft Jennifer Lopez & Pitbull, “Stuck on a Feeling” ft Snoop Dogg, “Extraordinary”, and “Handcuffs”. The deluxe includes the 12-song standard album + 4 additional new tracks!

The debut English album from Prince Royce opens with a razor-sharp electro beat, a pimpin’ Snoop Dogg appearance, and the first Anglo couplet to ever come out of the bachata superstar’s mouth: “I like you talking dirty/I like your filthy love.” Those lines come from the sexed-up highlight “Stuck on a Feeling,” while the album’s follow-up single, “Back It Up” with Jennifer Lopez, is a steamy ode to butts that belongs next to “Baby Got Back” in the Sexy Club Tracks Hall of Fame. Double Vision is decidedly in the post-R. Kelly, post-Miguel land of R&B, getting girl crazy during its title track (which should be the new strip club standard for introducing two-for-one dances) and then attacking the hips in a more a traditional style with the lustful Latin number “There for You.” Oddly enough, “Handcuffs” refers to a loyal heart rather anything found in 50 Shades of Grey, but the album is much more than just the Prince talking dirty in English. As far as crossover comparisons, this risk-taking and well-executed LP condenses Shakira’s multi-album English transition into one daring release, taking listeners all the way up to a She Wolf-type experience, where the production is razor-sharp and innovative beyond expectations. Slick guest artists Tyga and Kid Ink help the listener bridge the gap between the album’s maverick moments and the sweet songs aimed at teens, and with smooth-voiced Royce showing equal grace with love and lust, Double Vision becomes the great and infectious model for a 2015 pan-global pop album.

Recorded: The Loft Studio, Chicago

Guitar and folk music legend (and former Fairport Convention leader) Richard Thompson, who has been named one of Rolling Stone’s 20 Greatest Guitarists of all-time, presents Still, a stunning all-new collection of gifted songwriting and virtuosic guitar playing produced by Jeff Tweedy, leader of the famed band Wilco. This unexpected yet exciting pairing presents one of the most anticipated new releases of the year.

This Deluxe Edition features five additional bonus tracks.

It seems after more than four decades of record-making, Richard Thompson has decided he prefers to have a musician in the producer’s chair rather than a studio wiz. After producing himself since 2005’s Front Parlour Ballads, Thompson recruited fellow guitar ace Buddy Miller to oversee the sessions for 2013’s Electric, which featured some of Thompson’s best six-string work in years. Two years later, Thompson has returned with Still, which finds him working with another songwriter of note, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco. The sessions for Still were recorded at the Loft, Wilco’s personal recording studio and rehearsal space in Chicago, and Tweedy and Jim Elkington (who has worked with Eleventh Dream Day and Jon Langford & Skull Orchard) sit in on some tracks. Though the sound and approach of the album is a shade more ambitious and adventurous than much of Thompson’s work in the new millennium, rest assured this sounds very much like a Richard Thompson album, spare and clean and allowing his songs and guitar work to take center stage at all times. One of the best things about Still is that Tweedy clearly respects Thompson enough to stay out of his way, and the intimacy of numbers like “Josephine” and “Beatnik Walking” capture a feel that suggests you’re sitting in the room with Thompson and his rhythm section (Taras Prodaniuk on bass and Michael Jerome on drums). And when the production does add some layers to the songs, they complement the material nicely, such as the spectral keyboards on “Broken Doll.” Thompson sounds both comfortable and confident on Still, playing and singing with incisive force while maintaining a natural feel that recalls the man’s legendary live shows, and songs like “No Peace, No End,” “Patty Don’t You Put Me Down,” “Broken Doll,” and “Dungeons for Eyes” show Thompson remains a peerless songwriter. And if closer “Guitar Heroes” stops and starts too much to keep up its momentum, hearing Thompson put his own spin on the style of his favorite pickers — including Django Reinhardt, Les Paul, and Chuck Berry — is a hoot. If fans were wondering if Jeff Tweedy would turn Still into Thompson’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, the news (good or bad) is that Tweedy helped Thompson make just the sort of album that’s made him one of our greatest legacy artists, and it’s an example of why Thompson is still worth hearing 43 years into a career that shows no signs of stopping. –AllMusic Review by Mark Deming

Roger Waters’ album Amused to Death returns in a remastered release from Columbia Records/ Legacy Recordings. Amused to Death sounded the alarm about a society increasingly – and unthinkingly – in thrall to its television screens. Twenty-three years later, Amused to Deathspeaks to our present moment in ways that could scarcely have been anticipated two decades ago.

“I’m remembering the record from [over] 20 years ago, that most of what I had to say then sadly still pertains today and is maybe even more relevant to our predicament as people in 2015 even than it was in 1992,” says Roger Waters.

An unblinking look at an entertainment-obsessed society, Amused to Death addresses issues that have only grown in complexity and urgency over the past two decades. In 2015, television is just one option in an endless array of distractions available to us anytime, anywhere, courtesy of our laptops, tablets and smartphones. With eyes glued to our screens, the dilemmas and injustices of the real world can easily recede from view. The 2015 editions of Amused to Deathfeature a new 5.1 surround remix of the album on high-definition Blu-ray audio and a new remastered stereo mix completed by longtime Roger Waters / Pink Floyd collaborator and co-producer, James Guthrie. The cover and gatefold art has been updated for 2015 by Sean Evans, the creative director of Waters’ 2010-2013 “The Wall Live” tour and movie.

Produced by Roger Waters and Patrick Leonard, Amused to Death is a musically ambitious work featuring a stellar lineup of musicians. Guitar legend Jeff Beck figures prominently on the album, bringing his signature virtuosity to eight songs. Guest vocalists include Don Henley (“It’s a Miracle”), Rita Coolidge (“Amused to Death”) and soul singer P.P. Arnold (“Perfect Sense” Parts I and II). Also contributing were Waters’ longtime collaborators, guitarist Andy Fairweather Low and drummer Graham Broad; percussionist Luis Conte; and Pat Leonard, who played keyboards on several tracks. The album reunited Waters with composer/arranger Michael Kamen, who supervised orchestral arrangements for The Wall, Waters’ semi-autographical concept album with Pink Floyd. Kamen arranged and conducted the National Philharmonic Orchestra Limited’s contributions to the songs “Too Much Rope” and “What God Wants, Part III.”

Moving Pictures is the intersection between Rush’s ’70s art-rock style and their sequencer-laced ’80s efforts. An incredible stylistic leap for the band, the songs here incorporate reggae, percolating synth and even a new wave-tinged early ’80s pop sensibility. ‘Tom Sawyer,’ the ultimate alienated-teen saga, is the album’s best known song. ‘Red Barchetta’ picks up where 2112 left off with futuristic, sci fi-oriented lyrics. The instrumental ‘YYZ’ is as far into straight-up progressive rock as the band had ever ventured. Things get socio-political on the ominous ‘Witch Hunt,’ and a Jamaican flavor enlivens ‘Vital Signs.’ The increased reliance on synthesizers and sequencers would later become irksome to old school Rush fans, but on ‘Moving Pictures’, electronics are tastefully applied to further the group’s musical vision, making for what just might be their finest batch of songs.

Not only is 1981’s Moving Pictures Rush’s best album, it is undeniably one of the greatest hard rock albums of all time. The new wave meets hard rock approach of Permanent Waves is honed to perfection — all seven of the tracks are classics (four are still featured regularly in concert and on classic rock radio). While other hard rock bands at the time experimented unsuccessfully with other musical styles, Rush were one of the few to successfully cross over. The whole entire first side is perfect — their most renowned song, “Tom Sawyer,” kicks things off, and is soon followed by the racing “Red Barchetta,” the instrumental “YYZ,” and a song that examines the pros and cons of stardom, “Limelight.” And while the second side isn’t as instantly striking as the first, it is ultimately rewarding. The long and winding “The Camera Eye” begins with a synth-driven piece before transforming into one of the band’s more straight-ahead epics, while “Witch Hunt” and “Vital Signs” remain two of the trio’s more underrated rock compositions. Rush proved with Moving Pictures that there was still uncharted territory to explore within the hard rock format, and were rewarded with their most enduring and popular album.

About the Mastering
Four engineers at Abbey Road Studios in London have remastered these historic EMI recordings from their original analogue sources for release in pristine hi-def. Between them, Simon Gibson, Ian Jones, Andy Walter and Allan Ramsay have many years of experience remastering archive recordings for EMI and other record labels. The process always starts with finding all of the records and tapes in EMI’s archive in London and comparing different sources and any previous CD reissues. We consult each recording’s job file, which contains notes about the recording made by the engineer and producer. For example, this sometimes explain why there is more than one set of tapes to choose from. All of the tapes are generally in good condition and we play them on our Studer A80 π inch tape machine, after careful calibration of its replay characteristics.

In order to have the best digital remastering tools at our disposal for the remastering, we transfer from analogue to the digital domain at 96 KHz and 24-bit resolution using a Prism ADA-8 converter and capture the audio to our SADiE Digital Audio Workstation.

Sarah McLachlan – Shine On (2014) [Deluxe Edition]
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44.1kHz | Time – 46:50 minutes | 546 MB | Genre: Pop
Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | @ Verve Music ,a Division of UMG Recordings, Inc.

Three Time Grammy Winner and legendary singer songwriter makes her Verve debut with her eighth studio album, Shine On. Sarah has sold over 40 million albums in her career and is one of the most respected female artists in music today.

The new album was recorded in Vancouver with longtime collaborator/producer Pierre Marchand (the co-writer of hits like “Adia” and “Building a Mystery”), along with contributions from producer/songwriter Bob Rock (Michael Bublé, Nelly Furtado) and keyboardist Vincent Jones.

In a press release, McLachlan revealed that the album was inspired by her father’s passing and her own appreciation of life: “This album is about moving through the second half of my life in a more mindful and meaningful way, recognizing that every day, every moment is precious and though we all have our issues and problems, our damages, we all have the ability to continue to learn, grow from our experiences, thrive and shine on. Many of the songs are inspired at least partially or wholly by my father’s passing three years ago and the profound effect losing him had on me. I had to find my footing again without the anchor of his unconditional love.”

Shine On captures Sarah McLachlan at a period of transition, switching labels (she’s signed with Verve after decades at Arista) and experiencing the death of her father and divorce from her husband. Some of this turbulence can be heard underneath the surface of Shine On — explicitly so on “Song for My Father” and “Broken Heart,” whose titles give their game away — but the defining characteristic of this seventh McLachlan studio album is not despair but rather hope. Certainly, there is melancholy here — a feeling that surfaces in the slower, gentler moments, the kind of sound that is heavily associated with McLachlan’s mid-’90s hits — but there’s also a surprising, resilient buoyancy here, manifesting itself in big, ringing adult alternative pop tunes that pepper the album. Surrounding these songs — the best of which are “In Your Shoes” and “Monsters” — are those signature McLachlan swoons, the surprisingly soulful “Love Beside Me” and an effective, swinging coda called “The Sound That Love Makes” that’s built on a simple ukulele but soon expands. Shine On, as a whole, has a similar trajectory; it starts from simple, sad emotions, then builds out into an embrace of love and life.

Recorded Live at the Fillmore East, NYC, October 4, 5, 1968

A four-disc set of previously unreleased live performances, featuring four energetic shows from the legendary New York venue.

“We were at the top of our game then,” Greg Errico, drummer of Sly & The Family Stone says of the group’s 1968 stand at New York’s infamous Fillmore East. “The band was just killing it. There were moments that made my hair stand up, where that stage lifted off like a 747 and flew.” The performance showcases a band both fully formed and on the cusp of greatness.

When Sly & the Family Stone seized Manhattan’s Fillmore East for a two-night, four-set stand in October 1968, the sonically and socially advanced band was just starting to cook. Earlier in the year, “Dance to the Music” became their first charting single, a Top 10 pop hit. They were pushing their third album, Life, so the repertoire was still rather limited. As detailed in this generous release’s liner notes, written by biographers Edwin and Arno Konings, the Epic label intended to assemble an album from these performances, but the plan was ditched once “Everyday People” — the first single from Stand!, still months away from hitting shelves — took flight and went to number one. That smash was issued only a month after the gigs, but the band didn’t preview it on-stage, at least not the way the sets are documented here. Live at the Fillmore East October 4th & 5th, 1968 contains a representation of all four sets. Each one must be at least close to complete, as they’re between 40 and 65 minutes in length, and contain some flubs and the working out of some technical issues. Despite playing roughly the same songs each set while knowing that they were being recorded, the band continually switched up the sequencing of the set lists — “M’Lady” was placed up front and saved toward the end, for instance — and the musicians played loose enough to allow for some spontaneity and variable interaction. The band’s vitality, as they continually stomped through material from all three albums, is no surprise. Material from the first album and “Dance to Music” are played with equal levels of conviction. Sly’s demeanor is consistently fervent and poised. The whole gang is at the top of their game. What’s truly revelatory is that each set featured a Sister Rosie Stone-fronted version of “Won’t Be Long,” a song popularized seven years earlier by Aretha Franklin and the Ray Bryant Combo. It wallops each time, particularly so on the first night’s early set. That a studio version wasn’t released is as baffling as the heretofore absence of a live album. As heard here, they were playing like indisputable giants, not like a band fighting for a second hit. The CD edition is especially nice — a fold-out cardboard package with sharp, true-to-the-era artwork for each disc. It tops the double-vinyl edition, a truncated and smart selection made by the Roots’ Captain Kirk Douglas, released months earlier for Record Store Day. –AllMusic Review by Andy Kellman

“Something kept telling me just wait, just wait. Then finally, a year and a half ago, I did the first J.J. weekend at Smoke with this sextet and I finally realized I think I’m ready.” –Steve Davis

“Five Stars. It is hard to come up with more superlatives about Steve Davis. It doesn’t get much better than this … a marvelous tribute to a legendary trombonist by a legend in the making …” –Audiophile Audition

STEVE DAVIS, ONE OF THE MOST BELOVED TROMBONISTS in modern jazz, first dreamed of recording the music of J.J. Johnson some 20 years ago. “Something kept telling me— just wait, just wait.” he says, “Then finally, a year and a half ago, I did the first J.J. weekend at Smoke with this sextet and I finally realized I think I’m ready.” During those 20+ years, Davis was doing a little more than simply waiting, he was busy establishing himself as a worthy heir to his idols: J.J., Curtis Fuller and Slide Hampton. Along the way, he worked with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, the Jackie McLean Sextet, Chick Corea’s Origin, Benny Golson’s New Jazztet, Horace Silver, Hank Jones, Larry Willis, One for All, Freddie Hubbard and the New Jazz Composer’s Octet, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars, as well as the big bands of Christian McBride, Ron Carter, Jimmy Heath and Roy Hargrove. He’s earned the highest praise, too, such as Freddie Hubbard calling him “one of the greatest trombone players in the world,” James Moody commenting that “his solos never cease to amaze me,” and Chick Corea saying that he plays “some of the most melodic improvisations ever heard in jazz.”

For Say When, he’s enlisted the support of the very best—Eddie Henderson, Eric Alexander, Harold Mabern, Nat Reeves and Joe Farnsworth—to breathe new life into six Johnson compositional gems, as well as Cole Porter’s classic “What Is This Thing Called Love,” Warren and Gordon’s “There Will Never Be Another You” and Coltrane’s “Village Blues.” It concludes with a surprising rendition of “When the Saints Go Marching In” that Davis vividly remembers hearing J.J. perform late in his career. It’s just another reason that Will Friedwald wrote in the Wall Street Journal, “The highly respected contemporary trombonist Steve Davis is a perfect bandleader to present the vast riches of (J.J.) Johnson.”

Recorded: September 2014–January 2015 at the Dungeon

SYMPHONY X have triumphed, creating a panoramic “album rock” experience in an era cursed with diminishing attention spans.“This new one is about the song, really crafting each one on its own, to be as strong as it could be” says Michael Romeo, chief writer in the band, and proprietor of The Dungeon, the tricked-out studio in which the album was crafted, newly equipped with the latest in technology required to execute the band’s famous symphonic and orchestrated touches.

Although Underworld is not a concept album, Michael stated “like the last couple of records, there’s a theme that carries through, without it being storytelling. We try to find something to key in on and get the juices flowing, and here the goal was to find something a little dark but with emotional content. I started looking at Dante, and Orpheus in the underworld, where he’s going to go to Hades or hell to save this girl. So there’s the theme of going to hell and back for something or someone you care about.” Heavily inspired by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, Underworld draws on the themes from Divine Comedy most notably the part on Inferno. As homage to Dante’s use of the number 3 and its multiples, the band utilizes this motif in its music either in a lyrical or melodic context. The first song on the album is a three syllable, three note melodic phrase, and in the verses there are three references to three songs on the bands third album, The Divine Wings Of Tragedy.“There’s cool shit like this all over the record,” Romeo reports.

For Underworld’s cover art, SYMPHONY X went with their established illustrator Warren Flanagan (Watchmen, The Incredible Hulk, 2012), who similarly tapped into the “secret knowledge” vibe Michael and band embedded in the record. “Warren went with the masks, similar to the first record,” explains Romeo. “But when I discussed with him Dante and the underworld, he did his own research and designed a little symbol for each of the nine circles of hell. So there are these little geometric symbols that mean something. That’s just what he does. He gets in there and finds these things that maybe no one really besides us knows what it means and yet it has meaning.”

Newly remastered for vinyl and in hi-res by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, Surfin’ USA is presented here in both mono and stereo.

The stereo editions of Surfin’ USA were originally mixed in stereo by their own preferred engineer, Chuck Britz, ostensibly under the group’s supervision.

“Brian may or may not have been present for those mixing sessions — evidence suggests that he trusted Chuck’s skills enough to let him prepare those mixes on his own — but the group held onto their multitrack tapes and delivered stereo masters to Capitol, rather than allowing Capitol to prepare their own stereo versions. Later, when Brian was only delivering mono masters, Capitol would prepare the Duophonic pseudo stereo editions for the stereo market,” says Alan Boyd, producer and Beach Boys’ archivist.

In My Own Dream is a 1968 album by The Butterfield Blues Band. It continued the trend of its predecessor The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw in moving towards a more soul-oriented sound, supported by a first rate horn section, (featuring a young David Sanborn), but was not so well-received either by critics or the public as its predecessor. The title cut features a long solo by Sanborn. The drums were handled by Philip Wilson, who went on to jazz renown in the Art Ensemble of Chicago. This album is also notable as the last Butterfield record with original members Mark Naftalin and Elvin Bishop who both moved on to solo ventures of varying success.

Sometimes, one has to wonder whether the youth of the 1960s were really as open to new ideas and new sounds as their press would make you believe. Take the album at hand, In My Own Dream by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band — their fourth official release (though two others have since gone into their discography at earlier points), it marked the point where the band really began to lose its audience, and all for reasons having nothing to do with the quality of their music. They’d gotten past the loss of Michael Bloomfield in early 1967, over which they’d surrendered some of their audience of guitar idolaters, with the engagingly titled (and guitar-focused) Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw. In My Own Dream had its great guitar moments, especially on “Just to Be With You,” but throughout the album, Elvin Bishop’s electric guitar shared the spotlight with the horn section of Gene Dinwiddle, David Sanborn, and Keith Johnson, who had signed on with the prior album and who were more out in front than ever. More to the point, this album represented a new version of the band being born, with shared lead vocals, with the leader himself only taking three of the seven songs, and bassist Bugsy Maugh singing lead on two songs, Bishop on one, and drummer Phillip Wilson taking one song. What’s more, there was a widely shared spotlight for the players, and more of a jazz influence on this record than had ever been heard before from the group. This was a band that could jam quietly for five minutes on “Drunk Again,” building ever-so-slowly to a bluesy crescendo where Bishop’s guitar and Mark Naftalin’s organ surged; and follow it with the title track, a totally surprising acoustic guitar-driven piece featuring Sanborn, Dinwiddle, and Johnson. The playing was impressive, especially for a record aimed at a collegiate audience, but the record had the bad fortune to appear at a point when jazz was culturally suspect among the young, an elitist and not easily accessible brand of music that seemed almost as remote as classical music (i.e. “old people’s” music). “Get Yourself Together” was almost too good a piece of Chicago-style blues, a faux Chess Records-style track that might even have been too “black” for the remnants of Butterfield’s old audience.

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band is the debut album by Paul Butterfield, released in 1965 on Elektra Records. It peaked at #123 on the Billboard pop albums chart. In 2003, the album was ranked number 476 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, moving up to number 468 in the revised 2012 list, and also is ranked at #11 on Down Beat magazine’s list of the top 50 blues albums.

Even after his death, Paul Butterfield’s music didn’t receive the accolades that were so deserved. Outputting styles adopted from Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters among other blues greats, Butterfield became one of the first white singers to rekindle blues music through the course of the mid-’60s. His debut album, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, saw him teaming up with guitarists Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield, with Jerome Arnold on bass, Sam Lay on drums, and Mark Naftalin playing organ. The result was a wonderfully messy and boisterous display of American-styled blues, with intensity and pure passion derived from every bent note. In front of all these instruments is Butterfield’s harmonica, beautifully dictating a mood and a genuine feel that is no longer existent, even in today’s blues music. Each song captures the essence of Chicago blues in a different way, from the back-alley feel of “Born in Chicago” to the melting ease of Willie Dixon’s “Mellow Down Easy” to the authentic devotion that emanates from Bishop and Butterfield’s “Our Love Is Drifting.” “Shake Your Money Maker,” “Blues With a Feeling,” and “I Got My Mojo Working” (with Lay on vocals) are all equally moving pieces performed with a raw adoration for blues music. Best of all, the music that pours from this album is unfiltered…blared, clamored, and let loose, like blues music is supposed to be released. A year later, 1966’s East West carried on with the same type of brash blues sound partnered with a jazzier feel, giving greater to attention to Bishop’s and Bloomfield’s instrumental talents.

GRAMMY-award winning artist Warren Haynes has been recognized as a cornerstone of the American music landscape and revered as one of the finest guitar players in the world. Throughout his prolific career as part of three of the greatest live groups in rock history – Allman Brothers Band, Gov’t Mule and the Dead – his virtuosic artistry has led to thousands of unforgettable performances and millions of album and track sales. Despite all of the ground that Haynes has covered on his musical journey, the impressive thing is that he still has many miles to explore. On his newest solo album Ashes and Dust, he puts forth one of his most gorgeous, musically rich and personal albums to date. It is endlessly exciting to see one of the most brilliant minds in modern music shine an entirely new light on the depths of his creativity.

Ashes and Dust, only the third studio album Haynes has ever released under his own name, is a masterful work of art and a particularly important statement for Haynes. The songs are immediately and clearly different from his usual style – encompassing beautiful acoustic arrangements, a rootsy/Americana soundscape and honeyed vocals that cut straight through to the soul. Although many of these songs are brand new, some of the tunes that make up this album have been dear to Warren for years. In some cases he has been carrying them around for 20 or 30 years, waiting for the right time to record them.

This Deluxe Edition features four demo tracks, plus a live performance of Hallelujah Boulevard.
