Jamie Cullum – Twentysomething (2004/2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 62:51 minutes | 1,22 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | Artwork: Digital booklet | @ Decca Records
Recorded June – July 2003 at Mayfair Studios in London, England.

The Platinum-selling second album by U.K. crossover jazz sensation Jamie Cullum features a mix of originals and covers of songs by artists including Cole Porter, Jimi Hendrix, and Jeff Buckley. Acclaimed producer Stewart Levine chose to record and mix Twentysomething entirely on analogue tape, making for a warmer, clearer and more realistic sound-—one that’s enhanced even further by this pristine high resolution release.

As with Blue Note’s crossover wunderkind Norah Jones, Cullum works best when he’s not trying too hard to please hardcore jazz aficionados, but it’s not too difficult to imagine his bonus-track version of Pharrell Williams’ “Frontin’” turning some jazz fans onto the Neptunes. Showcasing Cullum’s sardonic wit and lounge-savvy attitude, the album deftly flows from singer/songwriter love songs to jazzy barroom romps and reappropriated modern rock tunes. Cullum has a warm voice with a slight rasp that retains a bit of his Brit accent even though his influences — Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Tom Waits — are resolutely American. Truthfully, Cullum isn’t the most accomplished vocalist and his piano chops are pleasant at best — Oscar Peterson he ain’t. That said, he’s still a kick. What he lacks in technique he makes up for in swagger and smarts as many of his original compositions reveal. On the swinging and wickedly humorous title track — a take on postgraduate slackerdom — Cullum sardonically laments, “After years of expensive education, a car full of books and anticipation, I’m an expert on Shakespeare and that’s a hell of a lot but the world don’t need scholars as much as I thought.” It’s a timely statement in our overeducated, underemployed “dot-bomb” economy and deftly posits Cullum as a jazz singer as much of as for his generation. Also compelling are his choices of cover tunes, as he is able to imprint his own persona on the songs while magnifying what made them brilliant to begin with. To these ends, Jeff Buckley’s “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over” gets a gut-wrenchingly minimalist treatment and Radiohead’s “High and Dry” comes off as the best Bruce Hornsby song you’ve never heard. Conversely, Cullum treats jazz standards as modern pop tunes, reworking them into contemporary styles that are neither cynical nor awkward. In fact, his atmospheric, ’70s AM pop take on “Singin’ in the Rain,” replete with string backgrounds and Cullum’s percolating Rhodes keyboard, is one of the most appealing cuts on the album, lending the Great American Songbook warhorse an air of virginity.

The level of production, recording and mixing expertise that Andy Wallace contributed to the album Grace, combined with the magical, sheer talent and artistry that is Jeff Buckley, has earned the album a place on many“best album of all time” lists. For me, remastering this incredible album is both an honor and a personal career highlight. Jeff’s music has touched so many people and will undoubtedly continue to inspire and move generations to come.

Grace‘s legacy is well deserved and the goal with this remaster was to uncover the beauty and depth from the original master tapes and capture them in the highest resolution possible. The depth and vivid colors coming straight from the tapes is now captured with this added resolution and allows listeners to experience this material in a more intimate, honest way. The mastering equipment used includes a vintage Ampex ATR 102 machine for playback from the original tapes as well as analog equipment from Pultec, Avalon, Shadow Hills, Manley and Neve. All of the analog to digital conversion was achieved using the Antelope 384 Eclipse Converter and masters were recorded and edited using the Pyramix digital audio workstation.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 55:27 minutes | 1,01 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | Artwork: Digital Booklet | @ Chesky Records

A superb, mostly self-taught musician, Jimmy Cobb is the elder statesman of all the incredible Miles Davis bands. Cobb’s inspirational work with Miles, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly and Co. spanned 1957 until 1963 and included the masterpiece Kind of Blue, the most popular jazz recording in history.

On this new Chesky Records recording, Jazz In the Key of Blue, Jimmy Cobb pairs up once again with 36-year old, Grammy Award winning trumpeter, Roy Hargrove. who has firmly established him-self as among the premier players in jazz and beyond.

The tried and true pair are joined, this time around, by guitarist Russell Malone and bassist John Webber. Malone, an Albany, Georgia native, built his chops in his twenties as sideman to none other than jazz organ icon Jimmy Smith. And Webber, from the American midwest, is more than an able torch bearer for past alumni of the region, among them Jimmy Blanton and Ron Carter.

Jazz In the Key of Blue continues to prove Jimmy Cobb’s mettle as a band leader, his imperturbable, rock-steady swing, paving the way for the rhythms and sounds of yet another generation of jazzmen.

Joe Satriani – Engines Of Creation (2000/2014)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 53:39 minutes | 1,01 GB | Genre: Rock
Studio Master, Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks | @ Epic Records

Engines of Creation is guitarist Joe Satriani’s eighth album that was originally released in 2000. The record peaked at number 90 on the Billboard 200 chart, remaining there for three weeks. This was a different album for Satriani, he backed away from his typical blues/rock sound and decided to venture into the realm of electronic music. “Until We Say Goodbye”, the single on Engines of Creation, was nominated for Best Rock Instrumental Performance at the 2001 Grammy Awards.

With Crystal Planet, Joe Satriani made an effective return to his signature sound following the erratic blues-rock detour of Joe Satriani. For the follow-up to Crystal Planet, Satriani is once again exploring novel territory in an effort to keep his music fresh, and Engines of Creation is the biggest stylistic shift he’s made yet — to electronic music. Satriani’s guitar is still the focal point of the music, to be sure, but while his virtuosity is obvious, it’s often submerged in the new demands of this musical idiom. That isn’t a surprise either, given that Satriani is one of the few guitar shredders whose taste and musicality have never been in question. But fans who simply want to hear him rip through his typical jaw-dropping solos may be disappointed (even though, in the end, there are more than a few solos), as will those guitar fans who reflexively disdain all sounds electronic. Having defended it, though, Engines of Creation isn’t a total success. While the music is certainly influenced by techno and electronica, it probably won’t appeal to listeners coming from those arenas; overall, it simply isn’t as adventurous as much genuine electronica, avoiding complex backing rhythms or edgy sonic textures; nor is it as hypnotic, meandering or drifting aimlessly at times instead of moving into trancelike states of consciousness. Plus, Satriani’s songs are often more traditional than they may seem upon first listen; many of the compositions are based on repeated themes and riffs and standard rock-song structures, switching between recurring, identifiable sections rather than gradually building and unfolding. However, the album can also be quite inventive. Satriani has challenged himself to find ways of coaxing totally new sounds from his guitar, and he weaves them seamlessly into the futuristic electronic soundscapes. Moreover, his melodies and main themes have rarely been this angular and off-kilter, meaning that exploring this music has indeed helped Satriani refresh and re-imagine his signature sound. Even the pieces that aren’t ultimately that revolutionary are still intriguing, since very few musicians have the technical training and innate sense of musicality required to mine this territory. Overall, Engines of Creation is a brave and sporadically successful experiment, and it’s also a promising new direction for Satriani should he choose to continue this vein of exploration and take it out even farther.

Remastering Notes by John Cuniberti:

When I was first told about this box set project, I suggested that we remaster the entire catalogue. I made this suggestion for two reasons.

First and most importantly, Joe’s albums were first digitized in 1987. While they were well done by the standards of the time, there have been vast improvements in digital audio since then. To achieve this goal, we started by searching through Sony’s tape vault in New York. Then, each original analog two-track tape was carefully transferred to high resolution digital using a Pacific Microsonics Model Two converter at 96k / 24bits. This produced outstanding sonic results that are closer in sound to the original mix tapes than on previous CDs. This process even reveals a few flaws, but if you have any of the original Joe Satriani CDs, you’ll appreciate the improvements in sound quality in this remastered box set.

The second reason for remastering was to provide more dynamic consistency between the albums themselves. Since the advent of the CD there has been a steady increase in their volume levels. This practice started with 7” vinyl records to gain more attention when played in jukeboxes. Unfortunately, the competition continues with CDs and in extreme cases, clipping and other audible distortion is introduced when too much digital processing (limiting) is applied during mastering. My approach to this box set was to use only the smallest amount of limiting to balance the perceived levels of each song presented. This approach produces a cleaner and more dynamic presentation of the entire catalogue. It also allows the listener to move freely between the older albums and the newer ones without the need to adjust their playback volume.

Turn it up and enjoy.

When Joe Satriani released Not of This Earth, he stated that his goal was “to make a ‘guitar-record- that would be enjoyed by all; not just a ‘guitar-chops-record’ but one with real music on it.” Remastered by John Cuniberti, analog mixes are 30ips 1/2″ tape, transferred and mastered to digital at 96/24.

Not of This Earth was the first studio release from guitar wizard Joe Satriani (not counting the hard-to-find Joe Satriani EP). This all-instrumental album was making ripples in the guitar-playing community not long after it was released, and it’s easy to see why: superior compositions, a signature style, a unique tone, and playing that’s out of this world. Satriani shifts musical gears deftly, often layering multiple tracks together to make a complex soundscape. The fiery sound of “Not of This Earth” and “Hordes of Locusts” is tempered by the cool, dark tone of “Driving at Night,” the far-out Eastern approach of “The Snake,” and the quiet, thoughtful “Rubina.” Satriani’s fluid playing and wicked licks are enough to drop jaws and widen eyes. There isn’t a weak track on this disc, even though the guitarist was still maturing when he released it.

Tracklist:

01 – Not of This Earth
02 – The Snake

Genre: Art Rock, Pop Rock  | Label: © Yoko Ono Lennon , Capitol Records | Source: HDtracks

Recorded: 7 August 1980 – 22 September 1980 at The Hit Factory, New York.
Remastered: ‘Stripped Down': Re-Mixed at Avatar Studios, New York City. Re-Mix preparation at West End Sound NYC. A/D transfers done at Sony Battery NYC. Mastered at Sterling Sound NYC.
‘Original Album': Recorded and remixed at Hit Factory, New York. Single remix at Record Plant, New York. Mastering at Sterling Sound, New York. Remastered at Sterling Sound, 2010.

Released on two CDs 2010 and now available in hi-res, this release of Double Fantasy contains the digitally remastered version of the 1980 Double Fantasy album plus a never before released ‘Stripped Down’ version produced by Yoko Ono and Jack Douglas. Includes ‘(Just Like) Starting Over’, ‘Woman’, ‘Watching The Wheels’, ‘Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)’ and more.

Double Fantasy was recorded between July 7 and September 22, 1980 at The Hit Factory in New York City. The initial single “(Just Like) Starting Over” was released on October 20, 1980 and initially peaked at #7 in the US. After the death of John Lennon in December of 1980, the single reached #1 in both the US and UK. The album was released on November 17, 1980 on Geffenrecords. The initial critical response to Double Fantasywas mostly negative, although the album was later awarded Album of the Year in 1981, with the award being given to producer Jack Douglas and Yoko Ono.

This digital remaster of Double Fantasy was transferred from Protools 192 kHz (Prism AD8) into an analogue EMI TG12410 desk, into Sadie at 96kHz/24bit.

The one unreleased item among Apple/EMI’s exhaustive 2010 John Lennon reissue campaign was Double Fantasy Stripped Down, a revision of the original 1980 album supervised by Yoko Ono and producer Jack Douglas. The intent of this new mix is to give the recording a greater sense of intimacy, but Double Fantasy isn’t Let It Be: it doesn’t have a heavily bootlegged original early incarnation, it only exists in its final form; it’s not an album that was designed as a raw back-to-basics record, it was constructed as a slick studio affair. Stripped Down attempts to take only one coat of varnish off of Double Fantasy, stripping away reverb and backing vocals, dampening some of the brighter colors and adding some studio chatter to give the illusion of eavesdropping on the studio, trimming the length of some tracks slightly, lengthening a couple other imperceptibly, boosting John’s voice to the front of the mix. Apart from “(Just Like) Starting Over,” where the removal of the doo wop backing vocals undercuts the loving oldies homage of the song, the changes are so subtle that they’re felt more than heard, cumulatively not affecting the impact of the album all that much. Ultimately, Stripped Down sounds like a rough mix waiting for all the polish that made Double Fantasy feel like a full, complete album. –Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Recorded in Toronto at Inception Sound Studios and McClear Digital Studios Baby, It’s Cold Outside was co-produced by Cole and her long-time accompanist, pianist Aaron Davis who also provided the dazzling orchestral arrangements for the 27-piece orchestra featured on four selections: Zat You Santa Claus, Santa Baby, Wildwood Carol, and the title track.
Also appearing on the album as core members backing Cole are: David Piltch and George Koller (bass), Mark Kelso (drums), and Brian Barlow (percussion). Baby, It’s Cold Outside possesses a diverse spectrum of seasonal emotions. It is not just Christmas favourites. It is not a bunch of chestnuts roasting on the open fire. It’s obvious by listening to it that Cole likes to poke fun at Christmas; likes to poke fun at the notion of Santa Claus; and really likes to swing with songs that have bit of sexual innuendo. There’s a lot of give-me-a-break about the album.
Cole chose Christmas songs with the same critical ear as all of her previous recordings. Not only did she take care in selecting the repertoire, but she set out to interpret them in such a fashion that they effectively are her own.

About the Mastering
Four engineers at Abbey Road Studios in London have remastered these historic EMI recordings from their original analogue sources for release in pristine hi-def. Between them, Simon Gibson, Ian Jones, Andy Walter and Allan Ramsay have many years of experience remastering archive recordings for EMI and other record labels. The process always starts with finding all of the records and tapes in EMI’s archive in London and comparing different sources and any previous CD reissues. We consult each recording’s job file, which contains notes about the recording made by the engineer and producer. For example, this sometimes explain why there is more than one set of tapes to choose from. All of the tapes are generally in good condition and we play them on our Studer A80 π inch tape machine, after careful calibration of its replay characteristics.
In order to have the best digital remastering tools at our disposal for the remastering, we transfer from analogue to the digital domain at 96 KHz and 24-bit resolution using a Prism ADA-8 converter and capture the audio to our SADiE Digital Audio Workstation.

This record is the fruit of McBride’s long association with the Vanguard, where his first appearance as a leader for the historic club was in 1995. In 2007, the bassist and charismatic club owner Lorraine Gordon started an annual one-week residency, which featured McBride’s quintet, Inside Straight. “Lorraine enjoyed my trio and my quintet, Inside Straight. We had such large crowds, so after a few years with such supportive audiences, we added an extra week. Instead of doing the same band for two weeks, I just started bringing in a different band. This has been an ongoing relationship that I look forward to maintaining as long as I can.”

Recorded over three consecutive nights in December of 2014, Live at the Village Vanguard showcases bassist Christian McBride and his trio in concert at the storied New York venue. A four-time Grammy winner, McBride has been a superstar in the jazz world since debuting as a teenager in the late ’80s. Here, McBride is joined by his trio bandmates, pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. This is the same outfit that recorded the swinging, sophisticated 2013 studio album Out Here. As with that release, Live at the Village Vanguard finds McBride diving headlong into a set of swaggering, lively standards, originals, and unexpected covers, including a take on the theme to the cult ’70s comedy film Car Wash.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/48 kHz | Time – 55:22 minutes | 757 MB | Genre: Rock

Every Open Eye follows CHVRCHES debut album,The Bones of What We Believe. The lead single “Leave A Trace” was released 7/16 to critical acclaim from Pitchfork, Spin, Billboard and more. Sonically the album is their signature style, uniquely merging the organic with the electronic, an electronic-pop record with a heart. This Deluxe Edition features three bonus tracks.

Chvrches’ impact on the pop landscape made itself known almost immediately after the release of The Bones of What You Believe — in the years that followed, artists big and small were borrowing the Scottish trio’s flair for heart-on-sleeve lyrics wrapped in soaring, synth-laden choruses. Even if the sensitive synth-pop field was more crowded at the time of Every Open Eye’s release than it was in 2013, Chvrches distinguish themselves by continuing to do this sound better than just about anyone. Rather than expanding on their debut’s combination of hooks and huge soundscapes, they streamline the formula that made songs like “Recover” and “The Mother We Share” so beloved. “Never Ending Circles,” with its staccato verses and sweeping choruses, might be the quintessential Chvrches song. This isn’t to say that Every Open Eye is predictable. The band makes some subtle adjustments, opting for a bright, punchy approach inspired by Quincy Jones’ work with Michael Jackson on Off the Wall and Thriller, where the producer made a handful of elements sound massive. Sometimes the ’80s influence is understated, adding a more urgent bounce to songs like “Keep You on My Side” and “Bury It;” sometimes it’s more blatant, with the synth tones on “Make Them Gold” evoking the theme song to St. Elmo’s Fire, and the giddy arpeggios on “Clearest Blue” echoing Depeche Mode’s “Just Can’t Get Enough.” But even if Every Open Eye is cheerier-sounding than The Bones of What You Believe, its emotions are just as complex. As on their debut, it’s Lauren Mayberry who brings Chvrches’ skyward sounds back down to earth. On songs such as “Empty Threat” and “Playing Dead,” she’s vulnerable yet clear-eyed, open to letting people into her heart and strong enough to let them go if and when the time comes. Martin Doherty sings one of the album’s most disillusioned songs, the Twin Shadow-esque “High Enough to Carry You Over” and shines on “Down Side of Me,” a mournful duet with Mayberry that delivers one of the album’s stand-out moments and proves the band’s dark side is alive and well. It’s another example of how Chvrches give fans what they want without rehashing their debut on Every Open Eye, an almost uncannily well-crafted second album.

See What You Started By Continuing is the multi-platinum selling band Collective Soul’s ninth album, and first since their self-titled 2009 record. Formed in the small town of Stockbridge, GA in the early 1990’s, Collective Soul consists of principal songwriter and frontman Ed Roland (lead vocals/keyboards/guitars), Dean Roland (rhythm guitarist), Will Turpin (bassist), Johnny Rabb (drummer) and Jesse Triplett (lead guitarist).See What You Started By Continuing was recorded and mixed at Edible Studios in Atlanta, GA by industry veteran Shawn Grove.

It’s hard not to see the title of See What You Started by Continuing as a bit of a jab at Collective Soul themselves. Twenty-two years and nine albums deep into their career, the alt-rock-era band has neither burned out nor faded away — they’ve merely persisted, putting out records at a steady clip that only slowed in the 2010s, when they took six years to succeed 2009’s Collective Soul with this record. The delay may have been the result of some lineup rejiggering — they have a different drummer in Johnny Rabb, and Jesse Triplett takes over the group’s historically unsteady position of lead guitarist — and the new members invigorate Ed and Dean Roland to return to their heavy, hooky roots. Most of the record pulsates to a fuzzy, primal beat, the lightness coming from the harmonies and melodies, the very things that have always been Collective Soul’s ace in the hole. Sometimes, they shake things up with a few old tricks — the horns on “Am I Getting Through,” a hint of gospel on “Without Me,” a stately power ballad on “Memoirs of 2005″ — but the record is front-loaded with the kind of riffy rockers that always made the group a pleasure. Maybe it’s a mere continuation, not a revival, but this heavy dose of straight-ahead hard rock makes See What You Started by Continuing one of Collective Soul’s best records yet. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

About the Mastering:

(Simon Gibson, January 2012)

Elias peppered the sessions with delightful special guest performances from Mark Kibble and the multi-GRAMMY® Award winning Gospel vocal group Take 6, her singer/songwriter-daughter Amanda Brecker, one of Brazil’s most celebrated R&B stars, Ed Motta, and renowned bossa nova composer Roberto Menescal. Legendary quartets have been a staple in classical, pop and jazz traditions. Among these greats is Fourplay, an extraordinary lineup of musicians who have influenced the contemporary jazz world. Esprit De Four, the band’s latest work, features the ensembles most challenging repertoire to date. All four members contribute to the album, which includes the melodic gem “December Dream,” the intriguing “Firefly” and the breathtaking “Put Our Hearts Together,” a musical tribute to the victims of the tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011. Experience the spirit and magic of Esprit De Four as a pristine hi-res download.

Recorded over the summer at the Hollywood & Highland KKJZ Summer Concert Series, Live in Hollywood features Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band at their best. The album opens as the live show did with the swinging tune Promenade. Sanchez follows the tune up with the first-ever Poncho Sanchez Medley. He says it s a concept that he and his music director Francisco Torres have discussed for years.
In addition, Sanchez pays tribute to two of his biggest influences keyboardist, composer and arranger Clare Fischer and Latin Jazz percussionist Mongo Santamaria. Fischer helped Sanchez get his first record deal with Discovery, the label for which he recorded before joining Concord in 1982.
Sanchez also delivers a high-energy rendition of Afro Blue that serves as a tribute to the late Santamaria, whom he considers a good friend and important influence. When Sanchez performed at the Hollywood & Highland concert, he introduced the song by talking about what an inspiration Santamaria was to him. While Sanchez s brief commentary didn t make it onto the album, the song still stands a worthy tribute.
For Sanchez, who turned 60 this year and will receive A Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Recording Academy at a November 14, 2012 ceremony in Las Vegas. Being able to make a living playing music is a dream come true. As a teen, Sanchez first learned to play guitar from the guy across the street because he couldn t afford to buy an instrument and his friend would let him borrow his guitar. He then gravitated to percussion after his siblings introduced him to the music that was then called cha-cha music.
I ve been involved with this from the beginning but just as a listener when I was a young boy, he says. I never dreamed it would happen that I would become a professional musician. You go with the flow and you go with your heart and what feels right, and now I know it feels right because this is how I made a living for my whole life. I m not braggin but I did pretty well for a guy from the neighborhood.

Grace Potter – Midnight (2015)

Grace Potter’s epic musical journey reaches a new milestone with the arrival of her solo debut, Midnight, an inspired work that is surprising, revelatory and wildly original. Midnight was recorded and mixed at Barefoot Studios in Hollywood with producer Eric Valentine, whose own diverse discography from Queens of the Stone Age to Nickel Creek evidences a similarly adventurous spirit and openness to possibility.

If Valentine’s studio work has a distinguishing characteristic, it’s his hard-hitting sonic signature, which is on display throughout Midnight’s dozen tracks. The core studio band consisted of Potter and Valentine on most of the instruments, with Burr on drums and percussion. In addition, members of Potter’s longtime band The Nocturnals: guitarists Scott Tournet and Benny Yurco and bassist Michael Libramento contributed to the sessions, as well as former tour-mates and friends including singer-songwriter Rayland Baxter, Audra Mae, Noelle Skaggs of Fitz & the Tantrums, Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips, and Nick Oliveri of Queens of the Stone Age.

Leaving behind her longtime band the Nocturnals — in name, at least; a fair number of the members show up here, including her drummer/husband Matt Burr — Grace Potter also leaves country in the dust on her first solo album, Midnight. Teaming with Los Angeles-based producer Eric Valentine — he’s best known for heavier stuff like Queens of the Stone Age (he even brought in Nick Oliveri to sing some backup vocals here) but also has done work with progressive bluegrass band Nickel Creek — Potter dives headfirst into pure pop with Midnight, creating a gleaming confection that, at its best, could be mistaken for late-’80s AOR. Such submersion in gloss is bound to alienate fans who’ve long favored her Americana authenticity but Midnight bears the same considered construction as her four albums with the Nocturnals; the surface just happens to sparkle. At first, that sheen seems blinding: the neo-new wave synths grin along with glam stomps and disco allusions, guitars play to the rafters but are still overshadowed by vocal hooks halfway between Heart and Stevie Nicks or perhaps informed by the urgent revivalism of HAIM or even memories of early Madonna. Potter isn’t posturing here. She’s embraced every cliché that comes with this retro album rock and that enthusiasm certainly gives Midnight panache — she’s every bit as passionate here as she was on the rawer The Lion the Beast the Beat — but what gives the album resonance is how her clever songs keep Valentine’s supremely SoCal production from playing like aural candy. Both Potter and Valentine delight in celebrating and inverting the clichés of overblown ’80s AOR and that’s what makes Midnight such a fun trip.
